Josh Roche

Chief Executive Officer

Josh was born and raised in Zimbabwe. He underwent his Bachelor’s of Science in Agriculture and Agronomy at Stellenbosch University in South Africa. Josh has worked on a variety of agricultural operations in Southern, Eastern, and Western Africa. From 2013 to 2016, Josh focused on conservation farming and hybrid seed production in Zambia. Josh has been in East Africa since 2016, working on business models for sustainable Agriculture. As CEO and founding partner, Josh is the first point of contact for new business development. Josh’s extensive leadership ability and hands-on knowledge is vital to the AVI team.

Andrew Uden

President

Andrew grew up near Lexington, Nebraska where his family owns and operates a large cattle feedlot. His life has been dedicated to the beef industry, working across the spectrum of production agriculture. Andrew has gained knowledge across the spectrum through farm operations, international development, agricultural technology, and strategic partnerships. Andrew completed a Bachelor’s of Science in Animal Science from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He furthered his education by receiving his Master’s of Applied Science focusing on Development of Livestock Systems leading him to extensive experience in agricultural production in Australia, Russia, and East Africa. Andrew co-founded Quantified Ag, a livestock technology company focusing on biometric devices and data analytics for beef cattle, in Lincoln, Nebraska. His love for production agriculture has kept him involved in management operations of Agri-Steer, Australian Agriculture Company’s cattle sector, and an integrated cattle operation in Southwest Russia. As a founding partner and Managing Direct, Andrew brings a strong international agriculture development focus and history of starting businesses to the AVI team.

Andrew Cavell

Director of Strategy

Andrew is a British citizen and resident of Uganda. He started his career in the banking and financing industry at Barclays Banking Group in 1961. Working his way through the ranks, he became the Senior Manager of the Head Office in London. After serving as Managing Director on the Board of Directors of Barclays Bank of Uganda in 1993, he took a position in 1998 as the CEO of DFCU Bank in Uganda. Three years later, Andrew moved to Centenary Rural Development Bank in Uganda and was the acting CEO overseeing all national operations. In 2004, Andrew became the non-executive director and chairman of the credit committee for Commercial Microfinance Ltd. Andrews impressive history in the banking and finance industry across Africa and various non-executive directorships in Uganda, Spain, and Tanzania bring strong value to the AVI team.

Ryan Sherwood

Chief Operating Officer

Ryan has spent his 15-year professional career in agriculture, most recently working as the VP of Grain for the Aurora Cooperative in Nebraska. At Aurora, Ryan began as Head of Grain Marketing recruiting key hires, developing new customer relationships, and laying the foundation for future success. Ryan quickly rose to the top position in the business unit. Under his leadership, the grain division experienced rapid growth, nearly doubling gross income, doubled number of units handled and was achieved without increased operational expenses. As the divisional VP, Ryan was responsible for organizing grain operations, directing logistics, oversaw back-office operations and was ultimately responsible for its operational success.

Ryan considers building meaningful relationships with customers and fellow employees the key to a successful business. Developing and supporting these relationships was an integral part of his early career as a commodity futures broker with FCStone and continues to focus on this aspect. Ryan strives to find optimal solutions for AVI clientele and ultimately the highest standard of customer satisfaction.

Ryan is a Nebraska native and lives in the Denver suburb Aurora, Colorado with his wife, three kids, and dog. When not working, he enjoys outdoor activities with his family such as golfing, hiking and fishing and has completed two marathons. He is a committee member and former president of the Red Cloud Community Foundation Fund in his childhood hometown that focuses on the economic, educational, and social needs of the rural area.

Sarah Choppala

CFO

Sarah comes from a multicultural and a multilinguistic background, where she has lived in Kuwait, various parts of India and now lives in Lincoln, Nebraska. She graduated with a Bachelor’s in Electrical & Electronics Engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, India and obtained her Master’s in Business Administration specializing in Finance. Prior to joining Ag Vision International, Sarah has earned considerable experience in financial services industry varying from mergers & acquisition deals, divestments, debt & equity finance, restructurings, strategy & value creation, and portfolio management. She has worked with centrally owned Industrial Finance Corporation of India, and successfully executed transformative investments & consulting services for privately held and state-owned entities in diverse industries including energy (oil, gas and power), infrastructure development & construction, manufacturing, and financial services. As a highly committed finance professional, Sarah brings in her leadership capability and expertise to the AVI team.

Herbert Dusabe

Director of Legal

Being one of Uganda’s leading energy sector legal experts, Mr. Dusabe has been involved with electricity and petroleum since the mid-1990s. In Uganda, Herbert has negotiated and drafted several legal and contractual documents for several Power Project developments, while also engaging as the legal adviser to the Government of Uganda. As an advocate of the High Court of Uganda, Herbert is a member of the East African Law Society both well versed in private and public investment sectors. Herbert advised the Attorney General’s Office of Uganda in inter-ministerial meetings on the sustainable development of Uganda’s natural resources. His practice with the Government involved energy, environmental, and water legislation, agreements, policies, contracts, and international conventions through drafting, reviewing and analyzing documents. Aside from Herbert’s legal expertise, he is also a farmer. His 1800 acres of local Ankole cattle, and Zebu and crossbred Simmental cattle while breeding high-quality savannah goats makes Herbert’s lifetime legal experience a perfect fit to AVI’s team.

Mike Woodward

Operations Director

Mike is from the United Kingdom. Over the past fourteen years he has spent time working in 28 countries across Africa & The Middle East, building his professional life in operations management throughout the region. Mike spent 9 years managing a large construction company in South Sudan, serving as Country Manager, being in charge of all primary operations. Before his time in South Sudan, Mike was an Overland Expedition Leader, managing a multi-truck team on routes as diverse as Istanbul – Cape Town to Gibraltar – Cameroon. Mike’s extensive history of African operations, proven capability and significant track record of success make Mike a vital member of the AVI team.

Apollo Ataho

In-Country Coordinator

Apollo is a professional medical doctor and agriculture enthusiast from Uganda. His influential experience in cattle farming has earned him various national accolades including Uganda’s Best Farmer (central region) 2015, and numerous show ring trophies as the operational director at Frank-Farm Estates. Apollo was educated at Kings College Budo, Mbarara University of Science and Technology and a certification from the University of Manchester, UK. As Operations Director at Frank-Farm Estates, he is responsible for farm staff management, grazing, and production strategies, herd management, and product marketing. Apollo was also a National Executive Committee member of Renaissance Livestock Farmers Network (RELINE) focusing on value chain management to sustain profitable farms. Apollo brings practical and cultural knowledge of Ugandan agriculture allowing him to be an essential member of AVI’s team.
